Principal
The principal of Bircham-Global, Dr John Bircham (B.Agr.Sc; M.Agr.Sc. (Hons); Ph.D.) is an author, seminar and conference speaker, trainer and consultant. Management Sytems have been his life, whether developing and implementing new ones or working out why existing ones have failed or are failing.
Research Scientist
Trained as a research scientist, he spent 15 years researching temperate grassland grazing ecology – self-contained or closed grazing livestock farming systems, which taught him the importance of factoring in uncertainty and resiliency into all leadership and management decision-making.
The managers of these systems (farmers) constantly formulate strategy and make decisions in the midst of the uncertainty of dynamic and interacting market, environmental and climatic landscapes. These managers make their decisions in the knowledge that what they do today, whether freely or unwillingly because they have no option, will influence (positively and negatively) both short-term outcomes and overall sustainability. They intuitively understand the resiliency of the systems they manage, how far they can push them and the ramifications of the pressure they subject the system to.
Commerce
For over 25 years John has applied the complex-adaptive systems thinking he learnt as a research worker in the world of commerce and government around the world, but principally in Australasia, working in many sectors including government (housing, education & income support), health, insurance, telecommunications, leisure, pension funds, utilities, tertiary education, minority people groups and small business.
He has, amongst the many things he has been involved with, managed large technical projects, integrated technology into labour-intensive management systems; developed and implemented risk, compliance and assurance frameworks, and CRM (Customer Relationship Management) systems; advised on ethnic housing initiatives, state health strategy, tertiary institution and multinational strategy.
A recent initiative, a board performance and governance review system developed in conjunction with an Australian colleague, continues to gather momentum in the United Kingdom.
John’s contribution to the world of commerce will continue to be, as it always has been, in the context of the complex-adaptive – his ability to think, develop and implement in this realm, to evolve-facilitate insight into the taming of Wicked Problems.
Conference & Seminar Speaker
An accomplished written and verbal communicator, John is a frequent speaker on a wide-range of topics including governance, risk management, strategic and operational resilience, leading change, the sharing and transfer of knowledge, and the embedding of the afore-mentioned into organisational culture.
John also conducts Learning & Development workshops on a range of topics.
